Posted Monday 26th November 2012 -

Prostate Cancer UK has today (Monday 26th November) launched its partnership with national event organiser, UK Cycling Events, becoming its official charity partner for 2013. Prostate Cancer UK will benefit from the Wiggle Super Series 2013, which is organised by UK Cycling Events, and consists of 35 events around the UK. Cyclists taking part in these events will be encouraged to raise funds to help tackle the most common cancer in men.

With over 30,000 riders taking part in the Wiggle Super Series this year, and participant numbers expected to rise in 2013, the partnership is set to raise both awareness of the disease and funds for Prostate Cancer UK through sponsorship. Prostate Cancer UK is also aiming to recruit over 4000 cyclists to its existing army of supporters within the charity?s cycling team.

Mark Bishop, Director of Fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK, said: ?We are incredibly excited to be teaming up with the biggest cycling event organiser in the UK. The partnership will provide an opportunity to raise essential funds that will help us support more men with prostate cancer, provide vital information and find answers by funding research into causes and treatments.

?It is also a fantastic opportunity to engage with new supporters and raise awareness of the most common cancer in men, a disease which kills 10,000 every year in the UK. That?s one man every hour.?

Martin Barden, Director of UK Cycling Events, said: ?We are delighted to be supporting Prostate Cancer UK in 2013. This fantastic charity is highly relevant in cycling, and we hope riders will use our events and the challenge they provide to fundraise vital funds?.

Uzbek court overturns ruling to seize MTS assets

ALMATY, Kazakhstan (AP) ? Russia's largest mobile telecommunications company said Friday that a court in Uzbekistan has reversed a September ruling to seize assets belonging to its subsidiary in the Central Asian nation but also slapped it with a fine.

MTS said in an emailed statement that an appeals court in the capital, Tashkent, imposed a $600 million penalty to compensate for alleged tax evasion and embezzlement at the Moscow-based company's subsidiary, Uzdunrobita.

Uzdunrobita, which operates under the brand name MTS Uzbekistan, had suspended operations in mid-July at the request of Uzbek authorities, denying service to around 9.5 million customers, around two-fifths of the entire population.

The high-profile case has threated to derail attempts by Uzbekistan to attract international investors to the ex-Soviet nation, which has seen multiple state-led seizures of private businesses.

MTS said the Tashkent City Court appeals board ordered Thursday that it pay the $600 million penalty over eight months.

"We are satisfied that MTS's position was heard during the judicial process and that the company's demands have in part been met," MTS chief executive Andrei Dubovskov said in the statement.

Tashkent Criminal Court's order in September to confiscate Uzdunrobita's assets came in conjunction with the sentencing of four company managers to 2 ? in jail for embezzlement.

MTS said the verdict against the Uzdunrobita managers remains in force.

MTS says it has invested around $1.1 billion into its Uzbek business since buying a 74 percent stake in Uzdunrobita in 2004. It acquired the remaining stake in successive years.

Uzdunrobita was formerly owned by Gulnara Karimova, the daughter of Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov.

Karimova sold the company to MTS in 2004 at what market watchers said was an above-market price.

Former Uzdunrobita business partner, Sanjar Umarov, has claimed Karimova pushed him out of the company.

World stocks were on course for their worst weekly performance since June on Friday as concerns over the U.S. fiscal cliff and the outlook for Europe hit sentiment.

Groupon will be in focus after the group's results again fell short of Wall Street's already-cautious expectations as the daily deal company failed to turn around a struggling European business, sending its shares to a record low.

Russia's second-largest crude producer, LUKOIL , said on Friday it will study an offer from Exxon regarding Iraq's West Qurna-1 oilfield, which the U.S. major wants to leave, Interfax news agency reported.

President Barack Obama and the U.S. Congress must urgently confront the country's looming year-end "fiscal cliff," a senior Federal Reserve policy-maker said on Thursday. "This could cause tremendous damage to the U.S. economy if it is not addressed in an appropriate way," St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard told reporters.

The International Monetary Fund on Thursday urged the United States to quickly reach an agreement on a permanent fix to avoid automatic tax hikes and spending cuts early next year, saying a stop-gap solution could be harmful to the global economy.

On the macro front, investors awaited the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's preliminary November consumer sentiment index, due at 1455 GMT, expected to show a reading of 83.0 compared with 82.6 in the final October report.

Google?s Nexus 10 is $100 less than the iPad and has some advantages

For one thing, as reviewer Larry Magid notes in Forbes, the Nexus 10 is lighter, a bit thinner and even has a higher resolution display than the iPad?s vaunted Retina display.

And at a starting price of $399 for the 16GB model, the Nexus 10 is priced $100 less than the equivalent iPad. (The older iPad 2 is also priced at $399).

Tablet apps? Google recently announced its Google Play online store now boasts over 700,000 apps, but it doesn't break out those specifically designed for tablets and most of them were written for smartphones. With over 275,000 apps written specifically for the iPad, Apple's tablet beats the Nexus handily.?

But as Magid correctly points out, the number of apps is only important if you can?t find the apps you want or need.?

While Apple?s been developing iOS longer than Google?s been working on Android, Magid says there?s an argument to be made the latest Jelly Bean version of Android (4.2) that drives the Nexus 10 is on par with iOS 6. ?

One clear edge that goes to the iPad, Google has yet to release a Nexus 10 with optional cellular connectivity (it?s Wi-Fi only), while Apple offers Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi with optional cellular models.?
