How to Antique or Distress Your Outdoor Furniture or Dining Room ...

The distressed look, with its distinct character and style, is a much sought-after look that can enhance many decor styles. Distressed furniture works wonderfully well with a shabby chic theme or even a rustic theme. It is very easy to recreate the look even with new furniture. Here is a tutorial on distressing your outdoor furniture or dining room furniture and giving it some timeworn appeal.

Layer Your Colors Start by painting your outdoor furniture or dining room furniture, giving it multiple layers of paint in different colors. You don't have to paint using a brush or a roller, try using a palette knife or painting spatula to create a layer that will acquire a beautiful finish when it's sanded down.

Sand the Pieces After the paint has dried, use a palm sander to lightly sand the paint layers. To create visual interest, experiment with different grits of sandpaper or vary the pressure and the positioning of the sandpaper. In certain spots, sand down to the bare wood to give your furniture a truly-aged feel.

Strip the Paint Sanding will give a rough hand-hewn look but liquid paint stripper can cleanly break through the different layers of paint to give your furniture a well-worn, timeless appeal. Carefully pour liquid paint stripper over the pieces of furniture. Tip the pieces to let the liquid flow freely and puddle up in certain spots. Vary the length of time you leave the paint stripper on a particular spot to change the amount of paint being removed.

Add Distress Marks To create an interesting effect, use lids and rims to create ring marks. Scuff the surface with blunt pins to add to the furniture's textural charm. Add a decorative stencil or lettering and distress the mark by sanding over it lightly to give it an aged appearance.

Apply Shellac and Finish Give a finishing touch to your distressed outdoor furniture or dining room furniture with a few coats of water-based polyurethane so it won't yellow over time. For contemporary appeal, use soft body acrylic paints to create colorful drips or add acrylic sheets in vivid colors to give a modern artistic touch to old furniture.

Create furniture with an antique appeal with this easy tutorial.
